HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut politicians and gun control advocates are urging the U.S. Senate to return immediately to Washington, D.C. and follow the state’s lead in passing stricter gun laws.
About 250 people gathered on the state Capitol steps Monday, demanding Congress pass legislation that expands background checks for gun purchases, limits domestic abusers’ access to guns, bars large-capacity ammunition magazines, bans assault weapons and other measures.
Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont said Connecticut is a “leader when it comes to gun safety laws and we need Washington to follow us,” noting the wide-ranging bipartisan legislation enacted after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012.
Monday’s rally came two days after 22 people were killed in a shooting in El Paso, Texas, and nine were killed in an unrelated shooting in Dayton, Ohio.
