HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Montana Attorney General Tim Fox is using his recent trip to the U.S.-Mexico border to promote his campaign for governor, but state Department of Justice officials maintain the visit was for official business only.

Montana Commissioner of Political Practices Jeff Mangan said Wednesday that elected officials can bring up their work experiences in campaigns, but they can’t use state resources to do so.

Fox campaign spokesman Jack Cutter says no state resources were used.

Department of Justice spokesman John Barnes says the agency paid $2,776 for Fox and Highway Patrol Col. Tom Butler’s trip to El Paso, Texas, last week.

Fox said he wanted to determine whether the border crisis is contributing to Montana drug trafficking as the state’s top law-enforcement officer. Campaign officials then posted a photo and video about it on Fox for Governor social media websites .
