State Rep. Greg Murphy finished first in the GOP primary in North Carolina’s 3rd District, but his subsequent television ad shouldn’t inspire confidence in his status as the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

Murphy, a urologist, finished ahead of pediatrician Joan Perry 23-15 percent in a field of 17 candidates in the initial race on April 30. The two candidates will face off in a July 9 runoff in a solidly Republican district along the Atlantic coast.
