A shooting took place at approximately 11:30 am on Saturday near San Diego, California at the Chabad of Poway Synagogue, leaving 1 dead and 3 wounded, according to the Poway police.

Details: Those who were shot have been taken to Palomar Medical Center. The San Diego Sheriff's office spokesperson told the Daily Beast that one man is in custody, and he is the only suspect. The shooting occurred during a celebration on the final day of the Jewish holiday Passover.

  • San Diego County Sheriff William Gore said at a press conference that a man entered the synagogue and opened fire on worshippers with an AR-type assault weapon. 
  • Gore said an off-duty Border Patrol agent reportedly inside the synagogue shot at the suspect, failing to hit him but striking his car.
  • At least 1 woman has died, per NBC7.
  • Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein was shot in the hand, and tried to calm the gunman even after the fact, according to MSNBC.
  • The only suspected shooter — a 19-year-old man who lives in San Diego — has been arrested and is currently in custody, according to San Diego Police.
  • Initially 2 children were reported missing, but they've been reunited with their parents, reports NBC7.
  • The motive of the shooting remains unknown.
