Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, leaves the Federal District Court after a hearing in Washington on May 23, 2018. Manafort is scheduled to go to trial Tuesday, July 31, in Alexandria, Virginia, on charges relating to money laundering stemming from a Ukrainian political consulting, giving the public its most detailed glimpse of evidence gathered by special prosecutor Robert Mueller. President Trump[1] defended his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort[2] on Wednesday, while distancing Mr. Manafort[3] from special counsel Robert Mueller[4]’s Russia investigation.

The president praised Mr. Manafort[5] by highlighting his past employment, but emphasized he only worked with the Trump campaign “for a very short time.”

Mr. Trump[6] also accused the Justice Department of withholding information on Mr. Manafort[7]’s investigation.

“Why didn’t [the] government tell me that he was under investigation,” he tweeted.

Mr. Trump[8] emphasized that the charges against Mr. Manafort[9] have nothing to do with possible collusion between Russians and Trump[10] campaign officials, and he called the investigation “a hoax.”

Paul Manafort[11] worked for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other highly prominent and respected political leaders. He worked for me for a very short time. Why didn’t government tell me that he was under investigation. These old charges have nothing to do with Collusion - a Hoax!...

Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 1, 2018[12][13] Mr. Manafort[14] faces the second day of his Virginia trial on Wednesday. He pleaded not guilty to 18 criminal charges, including bank and tax fraud. The former political manager will have another trial in September across the river in Washington on charges of false statements to investors and failing to register as a foreign agent. His current legal woes will not address Mr. Manafort[15]’s possible involvement in Russian collusion, but is seen by some as an attempt to get Mr. Trump[16]’s former campaign chairman to flip and work with Mr. Mueller[17]. Mr. Trump[18]’s current lawyer Rudolph W. Giuliani told CNN on Monday that Mr. Manafort[19] doesn’t know anything that would be useful to the Mueller investigation. • Jeff Mordock contributed to this article.
